Limited Income Energy Efficiency Assistance Program for Houses in the City of Toronto and Peel Region

Conservation program empowers low income households

Toronto, Ontario - July 3, 2007 - Green$aver is delivering the province's Energy Efficiency Home Assistance Program in the City of Toronto and Peel Region, helping the private low income housing sector improve home energy efficiency.

This program will target as many as 270 private single, semi-detached and row houses in the GTA, providing both homeowners and tenants with energy assessments, education programs, and upgrades or replacement of inefficient equipment and appliances at no charge.

All of the houses have electricity as their prime heating source "because that is where the greatest energy savings can be achieved and, at the same time, put much needed income back into the pockets of those who need it most," says Mr. Peter Love, Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Office, and Vice President of the Ontario Power Authority.

The Ontario Power Authority has provided $2.9 million in funding for the province-wide pilot program, targeting as many as 1,400 homes in 16 communities. Green Communities Canada is leading the overall design of the program working with local organizations like Green$aver to deliver the energy assessments and upgrades.

"These families find it difficult to keep up with rising utility prices," said Vladan Veljovic, President and CEO of Green$aver. "Providing these energy efficient upgrades at no cost, along with education, can save these families at least 15% or more, as well as promote a stronger conservation culture in Ontario".

Comprehensive energy audits will be conducted followed by retrofits to generate significant savings and improve home comfort levels.

Energy efficient measures provided in the program include compact fluorescent light bulbs, low-flow showerheads and aerators, water heater blankets and pipe wrap, refrigerator replacement, caulking, draft-proofing and insulation.
